HerStory

Since 1998, Chrysalis After-School programs have given voice to nearly 5,000 different girls at dozens of local elementary, middle, and high schools!

“HerStory” is an event held once a year, recognizing and celebrating their achievements through the Chrysalis After-School program, which lifts up the voices of these wonderful girls, whose futures are unlimited! Be they future entrepreneurs, businesswomen, volunteers, or leaders – they will be resilient and successful in all they do!

The 2008 HerStory event (held May 13th at Drake University) also celebrated the 10 year birthday of the Foundation’s signature program, Chrysalis After-School and recognized four local young women and one adult woman for their leadership and commitment to improving the futures of girls in Central Iowa.

Honorees included:

• Elisha Hobbs, former T.G.I.F. (Thank Goodness I'm Female) member, a senior at Roosevelt High School for her determination to build a successful future and for her leadership among her peers.

• Shellby Carra, former G.I.R.L.S. Crew member, a junior at Lincoln High School for her commitment to her goals for success in life, her leadership among her peers, and for being a role model for others.

• Claudia Gonzalez, former Whyld Girl member, a sophomore at Roosevelt High School for her perseverance to reach her goals for success in life, and for being a mentor to others.

• Kym Leoni, former Whyld Girl member, a sophomore at Hoover High School for her resolve to embrace life's challenges, by not only by overcoming them, but by thriving!

• Elaine Szymoniak, past Chrysalis Board President, Des Moines City Councilwoman, state Senator and Chrysalis co-founder, for her lifelong work to improve lives of Iowa's women and girls and for serving as a role model to all women.
